A crowd of 500 business leaders, legislators, corporate partners and small business dignitaries applauded as Shepard Bros., Inc. was honored as the California Small Business of the Year for the 72nd District of the California State Assembly. Shepard Bros., Inc. was selected from among 26,000 small businesses in California’s 72nd District to receive this honor.
The award, which was presented to the company at a day-long event on May 28th in Sacramento by California Assemblyman Mike Duvall, is given annually to the small business in each Assemblyman’s District that best exemplifies the spirit of entrepreneurship.
At the beginning of the selection process for this year’s award, Mr. Duvall reviewed the small businesses in his district and identified 200 companies which he felt were potential award recipients. After narrowing the field, he visited 40 of these companies to see each of them firsthand. Based on Shepard Bros., Inc. success story as a family business, its outstanding reputation for meeting industry needs, its superior products, exceptional facilities, and its quality focus on manufacturing operations, Shepard Bros., Inc. received this year’s Small Business Award for the 72nd District.
Small businesses are defined as those with 500 or fewer employees and they serve as the primary economic engine that drives the state’s economy. Over half of the Californians employed in the private sector work for small businesses. These firms produce more new jobs, more inventions, and more patents than large businesses in California or any other state in the nation.
